Making Tinctures

Sometimes it is more convenient to take a spoonful of medicine rather than make a tea or decoction. Tinctures are made by steeping herbs in a mixture of alcohol and water. The alcohol extracts the medicinal constituents and also acts as a preservative.

To begin, place 4 ounces dried herbs or 11 ounces fresh herbs in a jar.

Then add 1 cup vodka and 1 cup water.

Allow the herbs steep in the liquid for a month, preferably on a sunny windowsill. Gently shake the jar each day.

Finally, strain the plant material out of the liquid and store the tincture in a dark glass bottle (it will keep up to 18 months).
